What to Look for in Energy-Efficient Replacement Windows

What to Look for in Energy-Efficient Replacement Windows

Replacing windows is a significant investment β€” and the range of options, specs and claims from different suppliers makes it genuinely confusing. This guide cuts through to what actually matters for energy performance, longevity and value.

Window Energy Ratings

The Window Energy Rating (WER) system grades windows from A++ down to G. A-rated windows are the minimum you should accept β€” they balance heat retention, solar gain and air leakage effectively. A+ or A++ windows go further and are worth the premium in rooms that lose heat quickly.

U-Values: The Number That Matters Most

The U-value measures how much heat passes through a window. Lower is better. Current building regulations require 1.4 W/mΒ²K or below. Good modern double-glazed windows sit at 1.2–1.4. Triple glazed units can reach 0.6–0.8.

Frame Material Comparison

uPVC frames are the most popular in Kent for good reason β€” they're low maintenance, thermally efficient and available in a wide range of colours including convincing timber-effect options. Aluminium frames offer slimmer sightlines but require thermally broken profiles to match uPVC performance. Timber frames look beautiful but require ongoing maintenance.

Double vs Triple Glazing

For most Kent properties, high-specification double glazing with a low-E coating and argon gas fill will deliver excellent results. Triple glazing is worth considering for rooms facing busy roads or properties on exposed sites.
