When Bifold Doors Are Worth It for a Renovation Project

Bifold doors are one of the most requested products we install across Kent — and for good reason. Done right, they genuinely transform how a space feels. Done wrong, they're an expensive disappointment. Here's an honest guide to when they're worth it.

When Bifolds Work Best

The sweet spot is a rear opening of 2.4m or wider that connects a living space to a garden or terrace. Narrower openings rarely justify the cost — a wide single door or French door will often perform just as well. The real gain with bifolds is the ability to open up 90%+ of the wall.

Aluminium vs uPVC

For bifold doors, aluminium is almost always the better choice. The slimmer sightlines mean significantly more glass for the same opening. uPVC bifolds are available and cheaper but the thicker profiles can feel dated quickly. Aluminium frames with thermally broken profiles now match uPVC for energy efficiency.

Configuration Options

For a 3.6m opening, a 3-panel configuration works well. For 4.8m or more, 4–6 panels give a cleaner result. Consider which side you want the traffic door — the panel that opens independently — as this affects daily usability significantly.

Threshold and Floor Level

A low-profile threshold (under 15mm) creates a near-flush transition — essential for both accessibility and aesthetics. Check what your installer proposes. Some cheaper installations use high thresholds that catch feet and look clumsy.
