When Bifold Doors Are Worth It for a Renovation Project
Bifold doors are one of the most requested products we install across Kent — and for good reason. Done right, they genuinely transform how a space feels and functions. Done wrong, they're an expensive disappointment. Here's an honest guide to when they're worth it and what to look out for.
When Bifolds Work Best
The sweet spot for bifold doors is a rear opening of 2.4m or wider that connects a living space or kitchen to a garden, patio, or terrace. Narrower openings rarely justify the cost — a wide single door or French door will often perform just as well. The real gain with bifolds is the ability to open up 90%+ of the wall, creating a genuinely seamless indoor-outdoor connection that changes how you use the space.
Aluminium vs uPVC Bifolds
For bifold doors, aluminium is almost always the better choice. The slimmer sightlines mean significantly more glass area for the same opening — in a bifold that matters because you're making a statement about light and space. uPVC bifolds are available and cheaper but the thicker profiles can feel dated quickly. Aluminium frames with thermally broken profiles now match uPVC for energy efficiency.
Configuration Options
The number of panels and which direction they fold matters practically. For a 3.6m opening, a 3-panel configuration works well. For 4.8m or more, 4–6 panels give a cleaner result. Consider which side you want the traffic door — the panel that opens independently without folding the full set — as this affects daily usability significantly more than most people anticipate at the buying stage.
Threshold and Floor Level
The floor level difference between inside and outside is one of the most overlooked practical considerations. A low-profile threshold (under 15mm) creates a near-flush transition and is essential for both accessibility and aesthetic. Check what your installer proposes — some cheaper installations use high thresholds that catch feet and look clumsy.
